Oscar Piastri used Max Verstappen as a valuable reference point as rain began to fall at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Rain arrived on the track on lap 51 of the race, initially affecting only the middle sector but creating quite treacherous conditions for the drivers.
Piastri was 11th at the moment and was lapped by Verstappen, but he managed to use the Red Bull driver to understand how to drive in the wet on slick tyres.
“Having Max right in front of me was quite useful in some ways,” Piastri told the media, including Racing News365.com.
“It was my first time on slicks on a rainy track, in an F1 car and having Max there… Of course I knew if there was anyone who was probably going to be okay, it would probably be him.”
Piastri ‘dissatisfied’ with driving during difficult weekend
Piastri managed to finish 10th and in the points on his debut in Monaco after Yuki Tsunoda had brake problems during the closing stages of the race.
The Australian believes it was one of his toughest racing weekends since his rookie season as he lost pace all weekend.
“From personal notes after all the practice sessions, I wasn’t too happy with my driving. For example, consistently losing six-tenths was not a very pleasant feeling,” added Piastri.
“So getting closer to qualifying and then getting a point today is a very, very positive step forward.
“The race itself was probably also the toughest of the year. But you know, those are the weekends where you learn the most.”
