May 29 – Nyck de Vries hopes to get his Formula 1 career back on the streets Monaco.
The 28-year-old Dutch debutante traveled to the Principality after being warned by Dr Helmut Marko that he perhaps only has three races left to salvage his spot after a disappointing start to 2023.
His friend and countryman Max Verstappen had advice for him at the beginning of the weekend.
“Even harder tests in this situation do not work,” said the reigning world champion. “You just have to race and not make things bigger than they are.”
In the end, de Vries once again extended the losing streak Alpha Tauri teammate Yuki Tsunoda in qualifying – but then finished 12th in the race.
“It looks like we’re getting close to the top 10,” the Dutch driver is quoted by Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.
“It’s very close in midfield, so it can be different every weekend. But our speed is positive and if we build on that, it will eventually come our way,” added de Vries.
“It’s already been a solid weekend, although you always want more. But we avoided trouble and got the car back. Our goal was to have a decent race and I think we succeeded.
“I don’t think we’ve done anything wrong. I’ve learned that you can’t force it. I have to be patient.”
