Medical is a government-funded healthcare program in the state of California, United States. It provides low-income individuals and families with access to basic medical services, including doctor visits, hospital care, prescription drugs and other necessary treatments.
Medi-Cal, administered by the California Department of Healthcare Services (DHCS), is the state version of the federal Medicaid program.
Medi-Cal’s primary goal is to ensure that Californians who cannot afford private health insurance continue to receive adequate health care.
Eligibility for the program depends on income, household size, and certain categorical requirements such as pregnancy, disability, age, or marital status. Medi-Cal covers a wide range of people, including low-income adults, children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities.
Medi-Cal operates as a partnership between the State of California and the federal government. While the federal government sets certain guidelines and regulations, each state is free to administer and design its Medicaid program. California has implemented various Medi-Cal extensions and improvements, such as extending coverage to undocumented children and young adults.
Enrollment with Medi-Cal can be accomplished through a simple application process, and upon approval, beneficiaries receive a benefit card that they can present to healthcare providers. The program rewards providers directly for services provided to Medi-Cal beneficiaries.
How to renew insurance for this year?
Beginning April 1, Medi-Cal beneficiaries receive communications from their county eligibility officer regarding the renewal process.
Renewals will take place over the next twelve months. Keeping your contact details up to date is extremely important; otherwise there is a risk of loss of authorization.
If your contact information or home situation has changed since the public health emergency began, take immediate action to update your information.
You can do this by contacting your local county office, calling the Medi-Cal Member Hotline at (800) 541-5555, or creating an online account with MyBenefits CalWIN to complete your annual renewal and report any modifications.
