Australia’s Jason Kubler took a hard-fought five-set victory in his first round of singles at Roland Garros 2023.
Paris, France, May 28, 2023 | Leigh Rogers
Jason Kubler was victorious in his Roland Garros campaign.
The 30-year-old Australian endured a fierce challenge from Argentinian lucky Facundo Diaz Acosta and recorded a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory in Paris today.
Diaz Acosta entered the first round matchup with tremendous confidence, having won 12 of his last 13 matches. This includes winning consecutive ATP Challenger titles on clay courts.
It took Kubler some time to defeat his 22-year-old opponent, who showed no signs of nervousness in his Grand Slam main event debut.
But Kubler’s experience ultimately proved telling, helping him take three hours and 24 minutes to claim a five-set victory.
This is Kubler’s second career Grand Slam five-set win of his career world No. 69.
This is also the fifth consecutive Grand Slam tournament where Kubler advanced to the second round, highlighting his superior consistency at this level.
It was also an important victory – if Kubler had lost, he would have fallen outside the top 100 of the world.
The No. 4 Australian, who achieved his career best in Paris, faces another challenge in round two. He will face 10th seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime or Italian veteran Fabio Fognini.
This morning, Thanasi Kokkinakis scored one of the biggest victories of his Grand Slam career. The Australian wildcard eliminated No. 20 seed Dan Evans in straight sets.
It was Kokkinakis’ first win at world No. 108 in a main draw in Paris in eight years.
