The award complements the enthusiastic reviews of the newly opened course at the Luxury Resort Residential Community
(Monkey Hill Barbados) – Judging team Golf Inc., an international trade publication that provides owners and operators with industry trends, insights and best practices, has chosen Apes Hill Barbados as runner-up in its annual Growth of the Year competition.
The “best of its kind” award “recognizes the best private clubs and daily fee courses/courses with the best new traditional and non-traditional golf courses (including short courses) that have opened in the last year around the world.”
Winners were judged on how well the project vision was achieved, field aesthetics, economic and environmental sustainability, route layout and land use. The judges were Darryl Bartlett, Senior Project Manager at NMP Golf Construction Corp.; Casey Paulson, Project President at Driftwood Golf and Ranch Club; Kevin Norby of Norby Golf Course Design; Mike Nuzzo of Nuzzo Course Design; and Tripp Davis, president of Tripp Davis and Associates.
Three Development of the Year judges stated about Apes Hill Barbados in their rating:
“A wonderfully thought-out and implemented vision with a strong focus on environmental sustainability. The shapes of fairways, bunkers and green complexes are dramatic and unique.” – Kevin Norby
“Spectacular! Beautiful modern buildings, great golf, all in a luxurious setting, this place has it all! – Darryl Barlett
“Beautiful views in a tropical setting; impressive commitment to environmental sustainability.” – Casey Paulson
That the judges cited the inspiring vision and successful execution of Apes Hill Barbados, the commitment to best environmental and sustainability practices, and the stunning Ron Kirby-designed golf course in this breathtaking setting is exactly what Apes Hill Barbados decided to achieve.
Apes Hill Barbados is owned by Apes Hill (Barbados) Inc., a Barbados company whose main shareholder is Glenn J. Chamandy, Canadian investor, founder and CEO of leading clothing brand Gildan Activewear. Chamandy purchased the property in 2019 and embarked on an ambitious project to redefine golf and life in Caribbean estates.
“The Development of the Year award is deeply appreciated as the judges touched on the essence of what Apes Hill Barbados is about in their comments,” said Sunil Chatrani, Executive Chairman of Apes Hill Barbados. “We have gone to great lengths to build a golf course and all-round golf experience that complements our first-class community. It’s a place where people embrace the most important things in life: family, friendships, health and connection to nature.”
In addition to an 18-hole Ron Kirby-designed championship golf course, Apes Hill Barbados offers unique complementary golf facilities including a short course, a 19-hole elegant clubhouse and a state-of-the-art Golf Performance Centre.
Apes Hill Barbados is a 475-hectare property of incredible elegance, located in the parish of St. James on the west coast of culturally vibrant and historically rich Barbados. The island is famous for its history, beauty, designer shops and world-class restaurants. It also has some of the best golf courses in the Caribbean, with Apes Hill ranked No. 5 in the Caribbean, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Atlantic Islands (Source: Golf Week “The best you can play”).
Sustainability is at the forefront of the resort’s long-term DNA – designed to make it the most environmentally friendly golf course and development in the Caribbean. Highlighting this mandate is Apes Hill Barbados’ partnership with Audubon International, a non-profit organization that helps places follow environmental best practices and protect the areas where people live, work and play.
The golf course and tee have been re-laid using the more drought tolerant Zoysia Zorro grass and greenery from TifEagle. The insect resistance of these grasses further reduces reliance on fertilization and pesticide use, bearing in mind that Apes Hill Barbados will eventually become chemical free.
Apes Hill Barbados has a uniquely serene atmosphere that provides the perfect setting for an inspiring, laid-back lifestyle. Home to a growing range of accommodation, the elegant facility is home to a portfolio of stunning on-site properties as well as holiday golf courses that allow guests to stay and play late this year or early next. There are several superbly designed housing options that offer something for everyone – from charming villas to brilliantly designed single family homes.
Amenities at Apes Hill Barbados will include a wellness center, several miles of scenic nature trails, floodlit paddle tennis courts, TigerTurf tennis courts, a spa, restaurants and special outdoor and wellness activities, as well as dedicated concierge services, including top-notch class amenities. Apes Hill Barbados’ golf coverage is just as impressive, with an 18-hole championship golf course opening for play in November 2022 and a state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center making its debut in January 2023.
