Ajax released a statement condemning the player’s actions and confirmed that the player had been fined for it.
Statement read (via Mirror h/t Telegraph):
“Steven reacted in the wrong way. He quickly informed (manager) John Heitinga of this and immediately apologized.
“After arriving at the Arena (Ajax’s home stadium), he had a conversation with Heitinga, Edwin van der Sar and Sven Mislintat. They also wanted to know his version of events.
“The conclusion is that his reaction was inappropriate and that Ajax do not agree. He was fined.”
The player also issued his own statement revealing that abuse was thrown at him, prompting his reaction. And while he doesn’t mention anything about the insults being racist in nature, he does imply that something disturbing was said to him.
He said (via Mirror):
“I regret my act, I shouldn’t have done it.”
“After every away game, we get a lot of swearing at us on the bus while we find time to sign autographs for fans who ask for it. I’m used to it by now, but people think they can shout anything.
“My answer doesn’t solve anything, I get it. It’s not good, I have an exemplary role as an Ajax player.
