GENEVA — Kacper Ruudwinning streak for a third consecutive Geneva Open title ended in a 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 loss with Nicholas Jarry in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Top-seeded Ruud broke his serve at 5-5 in the third set after the 54th-ranked Chilean hit two powerful forehands.
Jarry’s serve held up after missing an early break to force a 4-3 lead and took his second chance to score a match point after an overhead victory.
Ruud is now heading early to the French Open where he is seeded No. 4 when play begins on Sunday. The 24-year-old Norwegian won the warm-up in Geneva in 2021 and last year when he also reached the Roland Garros final, losing to Rafael Nadal.
Jarry earned a semi-final rematch on Friday of the 2019 Geneva Finals to which he lost Alexander Zverev.
Zverev had an easy passage through the quarter-final match. The third-seeded German led 4-1 in the first set, finishing 59th Wu Yibing The Chinese retired due to injury.
While Ruud lost his career record in Geneva to 9-1, Zverev is still undefeated with a 6-0 record at the lakeside stadium.
Second seeded Taylor Fritz and fourth place Grigor Dimitrov will meet in the second semi-final.
Fritz stepped aside Ilya Ivashka 6-1, 6-2 in just 51 minutes in the opening game on the court.
Dimitrov was in action for almost two more hours to overtake Christopher O’Connell they won 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4.
Both Dimitrov and Zverev were given wildcards in Geneva to prepare for Roland Garros.
